Inglewood keep unbeaten run

- GLENN MCLEAN

Inglewood remain the only unbeaten team in the Taranaki premier one-day cricket competition after the third round was completed on Saturday.

They had gone into the weekend sharing top spot with Hawera United but the latter were beaten by Woodleigh at home after they fell 47 runs short of the target.

Batting first, Inglewood made 218-9 from their 50 overs with Jamie Farquhar top scoring with 40.

Most of Inglewood’s top order contributed although no one went on to make a big score.

Stratford’s chase did not start all that flash but there were meaningful scores from Liam Muggeridge (63) and Adam Keene (66).

Their biggest problem was the lower order as they lost five wickets for just 34 runs at one stage as Inglewood got home with 28 runs to spare.

The match between Francis Douglas Memorial College and New Plymouth Old Boys barely made it into the afternoon at the school grounds.

Batting first, Francis Douglas were dismissed for just 77 in the 33rd over as they struggled to contend with the varied Old Boys attack.

Opener Shay SmithLuond (20) and Kurt Leuthart (25) were the only batsmen to offer up any real resistance as Taranaki spinner Mattie Thomas (3-9) and

Josh Thompson (3-11) cut through the order.

Old Boys wasted no time hitting their way to the modest target as they reached 78-2 in just the 13th over.

While Francis Douglas snared a couple of reasonably cheap wickets Ben Mitchell saw Old Boys through with an unbeaten 31.

Former Taranaki batsman Phil Barraclough helped Woodleigh reach 223-8 from their 50 overs against Hawera United in Hawera.

Barraclough fell just six runs short of a century, his innnings containing six fours and one six from 113 balls.

Woodleigh captain Moriz Hartmann continued his good early season form with 39 while Shaun Sullivan made 31.

Best of the Hawera United bowlers were Liam Heibner (2-37) and Cody

McGrath (4-38).

Hawera United never really looked like reaching the target as they lost regular wickets.

Fynn Riddick was the best of the Hawera United batsman and looked set for a half century before he fell one run short.

New Plymouth Marist United and New Plymouth Boys’ High School played out an exciting game at Webster Field.

Batting first, Marist United could manage only 159 as Bradley Slater grabbed an impressive five wicket bag.

While they lost regular wickets, some needlessly, Boys’ High got within seven runs of the win as Brayton Northcott-Hill (44no) was in the runs for the second week running.

He and Slater took them close in a last-wicket stand but Slater was caught at point.
