Pope not judging Trump yet
VATICAN CITY: Almost a year after suggesting Donald Trump was not a Christian, Pope Francis has said he is prepared to judge the United States president on his actions in office.
‘‘I don’t like to get ahead of myself nor judge people prematurely. We will see how he acts, what he does, and then I will have an opinion,’’ he added.
Asked last February about Trump’s plan to build a wall on the Mexican border, the Pope replied: ‘‘A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not of building bridges, is not Christian.’’
Trump hit back at the remark, claiming: ‘‘For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful.’’
The Pope also condemned the rise of populist politicians, claiming wall-building ‘‘saviours’’ were throwbacks to Hitler. ’’Hitler didn’t steal power, his people voted for him, and then he destroyed his people. That is the risk. In times of crisis, we lack judgment.’’
The Pope said Hitler had promised to give Germany its ‘‘identity’’ back but gave it ‘‘a distorted identity’’. – The Times
