Dickson named in NZ team
New Plymouth Girls’ High School’s Maya Dickson has been selected into the New Zealand under-18 women’s indoor volleyball team.
She was the only Taranaki representative selected following two trials in Auckland and Hamilton earlier this year.
Dickson will be attending the International Volleyball Federation’s world qualification tournament, the Asian championships, for two weeks in Chongxing, China.
Chongxing is on the banks of the Yangtze River and has a population of 9.8 million people.
Twelve of Asia’s best under-18 women’s teams will be vying for four places to attend the 2017 under-18 world championships.
With volleyball China’s most popular women’s sport, Dickson expects to be playing in stadiums in front of 1000 to 2000 spectators with the games broadcast live throughout Asia and Europe.
Dickson has now been selected in New Zealand age group teams for her third consecutive year at indoor level while she has also spent the last two years involved with the beach volleyball squad.
That has seen her capped 35 games for the New Zealand under17 indoor volleyball team over the last two years.
She also recently gained a silver at the NZ under-17 age group beach volleyball championship at Mt Maunganui.
Unfortunately, she was unable to attend the New Zealand secondary school beach competition a fortnight ago.
