Boyde wins NZ title

Taranaki karting young gun Logan Boyde made it two New Zealand titles in a row on Sunday, putting on a quality display of racing at the New Zealand Superkart Championsh­ip and Grand Prix.

Boyde, of Inglewood, took out the KZ2 125cc shifter kart class at the Hampton Downs course in Auckland, backing up from his New Zealand title in the rotax max light class in 2016.

He also went on the claim first place in the KZ2 grand prix title.

Boyde out-drove his competitor­s in excellent conditions and set the fastest lap time of the day when he completed the completing the 2.7 kilometre circuit in a time of 1min9.4sec, with a top speed of 175kmh.

Te Inglewood local was doing double duty in this year’s event as he also looked to back up his rotax max light title from 2016.

After the day’s racing, he found himself sitting second in the class after another solid showing on the track, however a minor technical issue saw him excluded from the results for the class.

The win in the KZ2 class capped off another top year for the 21-year-old mechanic, who has really come into his own over the past three seasons with multiple round and series wins. Other Taranaki drivers contesting the event were Derek Lawrence and Peter Cottam who finished 4th and 7th respective­ly in the rotax max heavy class.
