Grab your baby and get moving

- CHRISTINA PERSICO

If you want to get fit after having a baby and meet other mums, then Kangatraining might be for you.

Kangatraining started in Germany as a way to combine fitness, cuddling with your baby and post-natal training, and has since spread all over the world.

Kangatraining Taranaki held their free kangatraining and picnic at Brooklands Park on Tuesday for Baby Wearing Week. Trainer Andrea De Grey took over last year after founder Bernetta Billing moved overseas.

Kangatraining mums need to be at least six weeks post birth or 12 weeks post caesarean. The babies are held in a supportive baby carrier while the mums do their workout.

She first started with her daughter Indigo two years ago, before taking a break and returning with her second baby, Matilda.

‘‘I love it... I get to work out and meet some new mums and hang out.

‘‘We have over 50 mums... It’s really cool.’’

The workouts cover a variety of exercises that strengthen pelvic floor and abdominal muscles after childbirth.

‘‘It’s a little bit of everything... It’s a whole body work out.’’

‘‘It’s a nice gentle exercise too, so they’re not going to hurt anything.’’

Maia Harris has been coming along with daughter Avery Phillips for the last term, and said a friend of hers had recruited her to join in.

‘‘It’s a fun activity,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s good to get out of the house and get fit, and chat with other mums.

‘‘It’s good to build yourself back into fitness.’’

Kangatraining Taranaki runs three classes a week over an eightweek term. For more info message @kangatrainingtaranaki on Facebook.
