That Iran deal

-

Well, nobody can say that we didn’t get balanced reporting about President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw support for the multi-party arrangement about lifting sanctions on Iran if it promised to stop developing nuclear weapons.

First to comment was the Daily News’ editorial. They continued to perpetuate the opinion of many others that America was backing out of a deal which it originally supported and was negotiated by Past President Barack Obama. The overriding theory is that President Trump hates every accomplishment of his predecessor and is removing them one by one.

Perhaps the writer should have read the other clip from the New York Times first as it clearly indicates the reason why President Trump is so ‘‘anti’’ it. Nothing to do with personalities. Simply because, at the time, a poll of the American people strongly rejected the plan.

To illustrate the point it is necessary to quote from the New York Times.

The Obama administration refused to submit the deal to Congress as a treaty, knowing it would never get two thirds of the Senate to go along. Just 21 per cent of Americans approved the deal at the time it went through against 49 per cent who didn’t. The poll results were ignored.

It was ‘‘passed’’ on the strength of a 42 vote Democratic filibuster, against bipartisan majority opposition.

The majority of Americans never wanted the deal which was foisted on them and President Trump has carried out their wishes. The Americans said it was a terrible plan but their views were rejected. The current President agreed. Terrible plan. We now await Plan ‘‘B’’. There will be a Plan ‘‘B’’. If this situation occurred in New Zealand would we happily accept being party to a Treaty agreed by the government against the wishes of the vast majority of the population ? I don’t think so.
