Paws for a worthy cause

- Brianna McIlraith

Four students’ class project has gone to the dogs – but in a good way.

New Plymouth’s Pacific International Hotel Management School students Luke Tipping, Nicky Currie, Waiying Luk and Ashleigh Perston have spent three months organising Paws for a Cause, a fairlike event for dog owners and dog lovers alike.

The fun family day will take place at the Pacific International Hotel Management School (PIHMS) in Bell Block on Sunday, October 28.

It will feature stalls in the school grounds made up of New Plymouth’s dog businesses along with bouncy castles, face painting, live music and even horses and llamas. Entry will be by gold coin donation.

‘‘It’s a dog day out for family and dog owners, or just dog lovers,’’ Currie said.

Starting at 11am the event runs into 3pm but the group are happy to carry it on longer if it is busy.

Wanting to do something different than their peers, the four students, who are in their final year, decided to think outside the box on what charity they wanted to help.

‘‘We all love animals and want to protect them and give some money to them,’’ Perston said.

North Taranaki SPCA spokeswoman Jackie Poles Smith said she was delighted to help the students with their project and appreciated their support.

‘‘To know there are people out there, especially young people, are supportive of the SPCA and animal welfare it gives you hope for the future,’’ she said.

Leading up to Paws for a Cause the students have been holding SPCA mufti days and bake sales at PIHMS and have already managed to raise over $500.

Luk said they are hoping to raise as much money as they can for the SPCA.
