What she wore Golden Globes glam
Add a touch of red carpet glamour to your everyday look.
This year’s Golden Globes was a visual feast for those with a penchant for makeup, fancy ’dos and even fancier attire.
I went behind the scenes (sadly not literally) to find out how some of most loved red carpet looks were achieved – including that head-to-toe blue get up from one Lady Gaga.
While we’re less likely to be hitting any Hollywood red carpets any time soon (speaking for myself at least), I’ve also sourced some more wearable (and affordable) takes on the glamorous gowns and decadent jewellery that bedecked the stars on the night.
THANDIE NEWTON
I’m pretty obsessed with Newton’s hair
and eye makeup.
The frivolously frothy curls were created by hair stylist Nai’vasha Johnson, who calls herself “official curl queen” for good reason, using all DevaCurl product.
Super Stretch Coconut Curl Elongator was applied to wet strands, before Newton’s hair was separated into four sections to ensure even distribution of product. To get those gorgeous airy curls, Johnson then massaged a small amount of Super Cream into her palms and scrunched it into the hair from ends to roots while diffusing with a hair dryer. She finished by pulling her fingers gently through the curls before applying a flexible hold hair spray.
Georgie Eisdell was the makeup artist, using product from French high-performance botanical brand Chantecaille and a Lashify lash kit.
CHARLIZE THERON
Theron’s sleek, graphic but somehow still soft hair style is a super luxe way of creating a red carpet-worthy take on a short bob.
Hair stylist Adir Abergel says he was inspired by the colour blocking in her dress (the bottom section is white), “to create complementary contrast in the hair with the half up style.”
“I played with dual textures – high shine in the back with soft texture through the front,” he says.
To get the look, Abergel began by creating a deep side part. After drying with a brush and ghd air hairdryer, he flat ironed Theron’s hair in sections with the ghd platinum+ styler, followed by a de-frizzing cream smoothed through from roots to ends. To finish, Abergel took sections of hair from the temples, secured below the crown with an elastic, then tightly bound it with black thread.
Theron’s makeup artist Kate Lee created a perfectly blended face with products that included Dior Capture Totale Dreamskin primer and Forever Skin Glow foundation, complete with lush shades of taupe on the eyes.
LADY GAGA
Perhaps the most memorable look of the event, unsurprisingly, was Lady Gaga’s. Drifting up the red carpet like a dreamy blue cloud, Gaga wore couture Valentino and some knockout diamonds from Tiffany & Co.
While her huge gown may not be particularly practical in daily life, the periwinkle hue is one of my favourite colours for summer.
When it came to her hair, the singerturned-actor’s long-term hair stylist Frederic Aspiras was inspired by the Valentino blue as well as the elegant up-dos of 16th century European aristocracy.
Aspiras used a ghd Platinum+ styler throughout the hair to create a smooth finish, before spraying with a smoothing serum. Using ghd’s Oval Dressing brush to sweep the hair up into ponytail, he then wrapped and twisted hair into a half bun, leaving the end of the hair out and parted to each side. Finally, he wrapped the ends of the hair around a ghd Curve Soft Curl tong to create long-lasting curl, adding hold with lashings of hairspray.
To keep on the right side of dramatic, Gaga’s makeup artist Sarah Tanno kept things classic with Marc Jacobs makeup – a smoky, glittery grey eye and satin nude lip – and an emphasis on strong brows.
ROSAMUND PIKE
I admit that one of my pet hates is the wearing of jackets resting on shoulders, but looking beyond that minor irritation, a deliciously sparkly jacket is a quick and clever way to add the right amount of dazzle to any look, and if she’d just put her arms in the damn sleeves I could have awarded Rosamund Pike full style points for her slick, futuristic ensemble.
Bryce Scarlett was responsible for Pike’s extremely elegant centre-parted hair style that went gloriously against the grain of the usual soft waves we see so frequently at such affairs.
He too was inspired by the actor’s outfit – a custom black and silver Givenchy couture dress.
“Her detailed gown was modern and super graphic, and we wanted to make sure that her hair felt sleek and sophisticated to go with her gorgeous dress,” he says.
Step one to recreate Pike’s hair is applying Moroccanoil Volumising mousse at the roots and Blow Dry concentrate at the ends to create a smooth blowout. Centre-part hair precisely and fasten hair in a low ponytail, then wet the ponytail with Moroccanoil Luminous hairspray, comb through and mould the damp hair into a tiny tight chignon bun at the base of the neck. For maximum shine, Scarlett then misted Pike’s hair with Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine spray.
Like Newton’s, Pike’s makeup artist Melanie Inglessis worked with Chantecaille products, to create a memorably matte-yet-creamy look that showcased her perfectly shaped brows and chiselled cheekbones.
