- Cricket

Ha¯ wera United continue to top the table of the Revital Fertilisers Two Day competition after a win against New Plymouth Boys’ High School.

Ha¯ wera went into day two with a 97-run first innings lead and it didn’t take them long to get into the NPBHS batsmen second time round. Ethan Keller started the destruction in the second over of the day, with Thomas Graham caught for a duck. NPBHS were bowled out for 87, a score that included 7 ducks. Keller was the star of the show with figures of eight for 10.

In other matches, Inglewood moved within one point of Ha¯ wera with a decisive victory over Woodleigh. Woodleigh, having followed on, were bowled out for 83 before lunch on the second day – Inglewood winning by an innings and 32 runs.

New Plymouth Old Boys moved into third spot after turning a first innings loss into an outright victory over New Plymouth Marist United. Marist batsman built on their 37-run first innings lead throughout the morning session and were

72 for three prior to lunch. But Marist lost their last seven wickets for 33 runs leaving Old Boys 143 for victory. Old Boys put on a

64-run opening stand. Ben Mitchell and Thomas would both make 40 to see Old Boys home by seven wickets.

In the final match, Stratford would declare their innings closed overnight at

350 for nine, a lead of 244. Francis Douglas Memorial College would not get close to making Stratford bat again as they were dismissed for 78 before lunch. With the win Stratford moved into fourth spot as FDMC are left at the bottom of the table.

Mike Shrimpton Trophy

After a frustrating season so far, having their first two rounds of the competition abandoned due to weather, the Taranaki women’s side were finally able to play against Manawatu¯ at Pukekura Park.

Manawatu¯ skipper Hannah Rowe won the toss and elected to bat – a decision she may have regretted as Taranaki’s Taila Hurley struck with the third ball of the game.

The Taranaki bowlers would continue to apply the pressure early as Manawatu¯ reached 31 for three after 10 overs. Mikaela Gregg would take the momentum away from Taranaki as she scored 48 off 43 balls but Kelsey Husband would eventually clean bowl her giving Taranaki an opening. Kate Baxter then led the charge as she returned figures of five for 20, helping dismiss Manawatu¯ for 149.

Emily Cunningham (24) and Jess Hollard got Taranaki off to a confident start putting on 36 for the first wicket. Unfortunately Taranaki lost their final three wickets in the 31st over as they were dismissed for 120, and Manawatu¯ were victorious by 29 runs.
