US Ambassador says thanks

-

I’m writing to express my deep appreciation to your region and its residents for the warm welcome Gail and I received during our first ever trip to Americarna this past week (but not our last).

I’ve rarely felt so much at home in another country—the people of New Zealand and patrons of this wonderful celebration of American vehicles wore their affection for the United States literally and openly—with patriotic clothing and scores of flags flying—and many of them came up to me to express their support and friendship.

As the United States Ambassador, it was wonderful to have my first official visit here be characterized by such expansive hospitality and clear appreciation for the strong relationship between our two countries.

I’d like to especially thank John Rae, the event director, who really was dedicated to making our trip a success.

He’s incredibly hard-working and the love he has for Americarna and his hometown really shows.

I’d also like to highlight the amazing people and mayors of Stratford and South Taranaki.

Mayor Volzke exemplified Kiwi kindness with the time he took to host us in his city, and Mayor Dunlop showcased the best of his town and businesses with a lovely reception where we made many new friends and connected with old ones.

And of course, Gail and I will never forget the Ha¯ wera Elvis Museum with KD Wasley’s excellent memorabilia collection.

What an impressive tribute to one of the United States’ most beloved musical exports. I’m still talking about it. And we adored our visit to the Tawhiti Museum, a real labor of love for Nigel, its founder, and so engaging and educational regarding Kiwi heritage.

It was a pleasure to spend the weekend in your area, surrounded by great cars, marvellous people, and good old rock and roll. Doesn’t get much more American or Kiwi than that!

We’re definitely coming back next year. Sincerely,

Scott Brown, US Ambassador to New Zealand
