Man injured in hit and run

- Leighton Keith

Taranaki police are investigating after the driver of a car is alleged to have deliberately hit a pedestrian on Sunday night.

A 29-year-old man was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital by St John ambulance with moderate injuries.

The drama began about 7.45pm when two males, aged 29 and 17, were walking in the vicinity of Grey and Albion in Ha¯ wera and got into an argument with the occupants of a blue Mazda four door car, Senior Sergeant Kyle Davie said.

‘‘It appears there has been a physical fight between one of the occupants of the vehicle and one of the males who was walking along the road,’’ Davie said.

After the brawl between the two groups the 17-year-old and 29-year-old old fled the scene on foot.

‘‘It appears the vehicle has pursued them and deliberately swerved at them. In doing so the vehicle has hit the 29-year-old male and then proceeded to drive through a fence.’’

Davie said the car and occupants then fled and police were making inquiries to establish exactly what went on.

Meanwhile police were also seeking witnesses to a two-car crash on Mountain Rd, Eltham, on October 3.

Police were alerted to the crash between High Street and Anderson Road about

9.20pm.

While no-one was injured police wanted to speak with anyone who may have witnessed it or had information about a white vehicle that is believed to have left the scene.

Anyone with details about either crash is encouraged to contact their nearest police station, call 105 or Crime stoppers on

0800 555 111.
