Barretts back St John

-

An All Blacks jersey signed by Taranaki’s record-setting Barrett brothers is being auctioned off for St John.

The New Plymouth Rotary Club of Nga¯motu Charitable Trust has listed the jersey, which is signed by Beauden, Jordie, Scott and their parents Kevin and Robyn, on Trade Me to raise money for the ambulance service.

Rotary Club of Nga¯ motu member Murray Gillespie said the auction was running alongside its annual charity golf tournament, being held at the New Plymouth Golf Club on November 8.

He hoped having the auction on Trade Me, rather than just at the tournament, would attract a wider audience and higher bid, resulting in more money for St John – chosen by the Barretts.

Gillespie said the jersey was framed and would become a collector’s item, given the brothers set a record for being the first three brothers to each score a try in the same Rugby World Cup pool game, when the All Blacks thrashed Canada 63-0.

All funds raised will go to St John, Gillespie said.

He also encouraged those in the Taranaki region to get behind the five-ball ambrose golf tournament. Entry is $250 for a team of five, and each must have one golfer without a New Zealand golfing handicap. It starts with a barbecue lunch at 11am before getting underway at noon, Gillespie said.

At stake is the Russell Moore Memorial Trophy, in memory of a past president of the club, he said.
