Black Caps coach Gary Stead, speaking after the second test was abandoned to see New Zealand clinch a 1-0 series win, said the pair would have bowling workouts today and again on Friday before a decision is made whether they will travel to Perth.

The New Zealanders leave Auckland on Saturday, with the first test in Perth starting six days later.

‘‘They’re both progressing well, which is encouraging for us,’’ Stead said.

If one or both aren’t fit enough, New Zealand will bring replacements into the squad, with Daryl Mitchell, who impressed in his test debut at Seddon Park, the most likely to come in for de Grandhomme, with squad members Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson vying for Boult’s position in the XI.

‘‘Colin could have kept bowling through the test match, so he’s probably a little bit more advanced, but Trent scrubbed up well today, which was really encouraging,’’ Stead said.

‘‘I don’t know if I’m really confident – I’m quietly optimistic. They’re both tracking where we want them to be at.’’

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who made his 21st test century yesterday, gave his support to beleaguered opening bat Jeet Raval.

‘‘Batting’s a tough thing whenever,’’ Williamson said. ‘‘Jeet has had a number of successful times at the top of the order with Tom Latham.

‘‘You put that up against a really strong bowling attack here, those things can happen.

‘‘He has been playing well and in his role at the top of the order in general he’s been very successful so these sorts of games do happen.’’

Williamson said he and his team-mates want to show they not only flourish in home conditions, but in the three-test series in Australia.

‘‘The conditions are quite different – it was a brilliant series win for us but we’re going to have to adapt quickly over there.

‘‘Generally their surfaces are a little bit different to ours, they bring a bit more bounce . . . as a side we’re going to really want to commit to the plans that are going to give us the best opportunity over there. We know it’s tough . . . they’re very strong in any conditions but certainly they’re very clinical in their own.’’

Williamson was dropped twice during his ton – the second time with a sitter spilled by Joe Denly.

‘‘Yeah, it was fairly simple, wasn’t it?’’ he grinned.

‘‘I’m sure he was disappointed, I know [bowler] Jofra [Archer] was disappointed.

‘‘I was very fortunate – it was nice to still be batting afterwards. You don’t get too many opportunities like that.’’
