The Terminator ready to fight for boxing title

- Leighton Keith

After a month training in Thailand, boxer Tarn ‘‘The Terminator’’ Reid is back on home soil and looking forward to getting down to business.

Tomorrow night, the 41-year-old Taranaki mother will step into the ring at Auckland’s Cordis Hotel hoping to claim the vacant PBCNZ Super Lightweight title, but standing in her way will be Karen Te Ruki-Pasene.

The entire ‘‘The Fight to Glory’’ Glozier Boxing event, including 14 corporate and four pro bouts, is being streamed live by Corvus Digital Media NZ free on standard definition, with a HD version available on pay-per-view.

Reid, who recently returned from a month’s training at Thailand’s Kombat

Group gym, said she felt in good shape for the fight.

‘‘It was a great training camp. I’m ready to go to work,’’ she said.

It’s the second time Reid has shut herself away from the distractions of the world to train three times a day, six days a week, sharpening her technique and conditioning by sparring, hitting bags and running for up to six hours.

The routine proved successful the first time around. In November Reid made history by becoming the first Kiwi female boxer to claim the Australian National Boxing Federation’s Australasian Lightweight title by defeating Australia’s Rachel Loder on her home turf.

Corvus spokesman Michael Clifton said the company identified a gap in the combat sports arena and had live streamed a couple of events last year.

‘‘It’s on the rise but there is not a lot of coverage of the local scene,’’ Clifton said. ‘‘Obviously with the UFC guys blowing up I think more and more people are going to be open to finding out about what is going on in their backyard.’’

Clifton said there were some talented fighters around and it was exciting to broadcast the fights as a way to help promote the sports in New Zealand.

‘‘I like Tania Reid because she wants to fight, she is really committed and wants to get in there and see how far she can take it.’’

The pro fights are expected about 9pm tomorrow. to start
