Volunteers invaluable at Enliven’s Chalmers Home
Chalmers Home has a fantastic team of dedicated volunteers and is on the lookout for more in 2021. “Volunteers make such a difference to the residents of Chalmers,” says Manager Jenny Darby.
“We’re very grateful to have such amazing people on board here helping every week with the recreation programme, garden and other duties.”
More than 300 people volunteer their time at Enliven rest homes and retirement villages across the lower North Island every year. Volunteers of all ages regularly help at Enliven homes and there are a diverse range of roles that people can donate their time to, Enliven’s business operations manager Suzanne Simpson says.
“They give much more than just time. Volunteers become friends and supporters; they bring diversity, spontaneity and excitement to our rest homes and day programmes.” Some volunteers help with recreation activities such as the men’s shed or art and craft groups, and others provide companionship. “They might visit with their children or pets, or spend one-on-one time with a resident,” explains Suzanne. In 2020, Enliven’s volunteers stepped up during lock down to help deliver food parcels to people in need and regularly call retirement villa residents who were living by themselves.
Last month, Chalmers Home held a special morning tea to thank their volunteers for the hard work and dedication they had put in. Jenny says in 2021 they are keen for more volunteers to assist with the recreation programme and drive residents on outings in the van. Enliven’s Chalmers Home provides rest home and hospital level care, as well as short-term respite and health recovery care, and an engaging day activity programme.
