Maine coones, kunekune and birman ragdolls were being judged over the weekend – but not at the same show.

The annual Taranaki Pig Show was held on Saturday, as was the Taranaki Cat Show, with the two events bringing in people – and their animals – from all around the country.

The pig show, which was held at Stratford’s A & P Showgrounds, saw 82 pigs through the door, and even more spectators.

John Earney, one of the show’s organisers and the owner of Avonstour Island, a farm near Stratford, said it had been a great event for everyone.

‘‘It went fantastic,’’ Earney said. He entered 16 pigs all up and ended by taking out the top award with his kunekune, Nugget. ‘‘I didn’t expect that.’’ He said there were lots of great pigs on show, most of which were pets.

‘‘These people have got pigs like they’re dogs.’’

Earney said a number of different breeds were on show, including large white, large black, tamworth and kunekune.

Further north, in Bell Block, there were a number of other breeds on show – but they were cat breeds.

The 42 annual cat show was held at the Bell Block Hall and show manager Michelle Magrath and Taranaki Cat Club secretary Janice Davey said it was a great day. ‘‘It’s a fabulous show,’’ Magrath said. There were 92 cats entered and a range of different breeds, including: exotic, British shorthair, Manx, oriental shorthair, and siamese.

Lesley Parker travelled up from Ka¯ piti Coast and entered her Persian, orange-eyed cat named Pepperbox Mytee Knight – better known as Beau at home. The cat won a best in show award, and got two runner-up placings.

Another cat, Odakim Garbo’s Stand Out Style, was the supreme shorthair entire kitten exhibit, and won best in show under four judges and got a runner-up placing, too.

Magrath said they had people from as far away as Christchurch enter, and families came out to see all the felines.
