Drop in scans by app users

- Hannah Martin

Slightly more than one in 10 New Zealanders who have the Covid-19 Tracer App are currently using it every day.

As of Thursday, there were

2,810,683 registered users of the Covid Tracer App.

But the most recent Ministry of Health data shows the number of active devices – those that have scanned a QR code or added a manual entry on the day in question – is low, with only 357,422 active devices in the

24 hours to noon on Wednesday. This accounts for just 12 per cent of registered users overall – an improvement from 10 days ago, when just 10 per cent of registered users were active.

Use of the app appears to have plummeted overall, despite the opening of the trans-Tasman bubble, with fewer than 400,000 people scanning or making manual entries per day for the last 11 consecutive days.

The last time there were more than half a million active devices in one day was March 25 – six weeks ago. This is reflected in the number of daily QR code scans. On March 25, there were more than 1 million QR code scans.

In the 24 hours to noon Wednesday there were just 513,580 scans recorded. At its height, there were as many as

999,500 active devices on one day, coinciding with daily scan numbers peaking at 2.5 million in September.
