Fury at ferry crew sackings

-

A ferry operator owned by the government of Dubai has sparked a furious response from workers and criticism from British authorities after firing 800 Britishbased crew members without notice, amid plans to replace them with cheaper staff. P&O Ferries, one of the largest ferry operators in the United Kingdom, is cutting costs after posting a £100 million loss last year. The government has warned that travellers can expect 10 days of disruption on routes to Ireland, Northern Ireland, France and the Netherlands. Ferry workers, many of whom were fired by Zoom message, reacted angrily, and some locked themselves on board their vessels in protest. The British government provided millions of pounds of support to P&O during the coronavirus pandemic.
