Costly car park

The most expensive car park in Auckland, also dubbed ‘‘the hottest investment in town’’, is going for a cool $210,000. The covered space is located in a ‘‘purpose-built’’ car park in Auckland CBD’S Commerce St, opposite the new Pacifica Building. The Trade Me listing warned that car parking buildings in the area are being sold off to developers, reducing the number of spaces available in town. ‘‘Apartments and offices are being built without enough car parking, creating the perfect demand [and] supply storm,’’ the listing stated. The $210,000 asking price isn’t the only cost the new owner will have to pay – there are annual rates of $896 for 2022/23 and body corporate fees for the building, which came to $2911 in 2021/22. For the same amount of money, you could buy a section of land in Hawke’s Bay, a onebedroom apartment in central Auckland, a tiny home in Muriwai, or return business class flights for a family of five to New York.
