Lorde ‘bummed’ to cancel NP show due to low ticket sales

- Amberleigh Jack

Grammy-winning pop megastar Lorde has cancelled her upcoming concert in New Plymouth, originally billed as part of the 2023 Solar Power New Zealand tour.

The show was scheduled for Friday, March 3 next year, and current ticket holders can return to the point of purchase for a refund.

Lorde announced the cancellation in a recent newsletter to fans, saying: ‘‘I would love to wrap it in something to save face but honestly, it’s a pandemic, and we haven’t sold enough tickets!’’

‘‘I’m bummed, I love that venue, and I hope to play it some day in the future,’’ she said.

The rest of the New Zealand tour will go ahead as scheduled, and the Royals singer announced a second Havelock North show, to meet high ticket demand.

The new show will take place on Thursday, March 1 at Black Barn Vineyards and tickets will go on sale on Tuesday.

Lorde’s upcoming tour was originally scheduled for 2022, to promote her 2021 album Solar Power, but was postponed due to ‘‘uncertainty’’ around Covid-19 in Aotearoa.

The Kiwi artist became a global household name at 16 years old in 2013, when her debut album Pure Heroine sold triple platinum and won two Grammy awards. She was recognised by Time magazine as

amongst the ‘‘most influential teenagers in the world’’.

The now 26-year old is currently in South America, but will return to New Zealand this summer to play six North Island shows, plus a performance at the Electric Avenue festival in Christchurch on February 25. Fazerdaze and Rikki Reid will join Lorde as support acts for the New Zealand tour.

Lorde will play Lower Hutt on February 21 (sold out), and February 22 at Days Bay, Neudorf Vineyards at Upper Moutere on February 27 (sold out), Havelock North at Black Barn Vineyards on March 1 (sold out) and March 2 and Auckland’s Western Springs on March 4.

Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.
