Kiwibank local hero medallists announced

Fifteen Taranaki people are among the 100-strong list of the 2023 Kiwibank Local Hero Medallists.

Recognised for the value and impact their contributi­ons have on their respective communitie­s, the medallists are all in the running for the Kiwibank New Zealand Local Hero of the Year Award Te Pou Toko o te Tau.

The overall winner will be announced at the New Zealander of the Year awards held in March next year.

Taranaki medallists are:

Ian Dudley: For more than 50 years of service to Fire and Emergency New Zealand.

Jennie Rae: For three decades of work as a volunteer budget adviser.

John Oxenham: For co-ordinating emergency responses to 111 calls in Urenui for 30 years.

Jono Walters: For work as a kiwi trust ranger and in pest eradicatio­n at Omona.

Julia Kuriger: As Take Them a Meal founder, she has provided hundreds of free, home-cooked meals.

Julia Mcneil: She redirects unclaimed food boxes to uplift those in need in her community.

Kim O’connor: As a volunteer, she has contribute­d to the success of Women’s Refuge Pop-up Shop.

Lynda Hooker: Has raised $20,000 for Parafed Taranaki through growing and selling rare plants.

Norma Haley: For more than 20 years of support to raise money for the Cancer Society and Hospice.

Patricia (Pat) Keinzley: For her volunteeri­ng effort for Taranaki Age Concern meals service.

Paul Klenner: For his work with the Look Good Feel Better charity.

Rosemary Richards: For volunteeri­ng at Seasons for Growth, which helps people deal with loss.

Vicki Frewin: In recognitio­n of her role as Girlguidin­gnz Taranaki regional co-ordinator.

Vicki Roberts: For work increasing child and adult participat­ion in sport.

Wesley Milne: For efforts to foster a sense of belonging within the region’s queer community.
