Rotokare continue in top spot

- Matilde Silva and Luis Silva

Rotokare is the leader of Soffe Cup competition after a countback win over Pukekura on Saturday.

Jordan Fleming, playing for Pukekura for the first time, had a shortened day when Caleb Fleming retired after losing 6-3 in the first set. Pukekura’s Jordan Whittleston met Blair Crowley, who dominated the match winning 7-5 6-1. Pukekura women Tenzin Joe, Lili Lay and Greer Upson won their matches. Rotokare’s only winner was Karen Cranston, who beat Derryn Fleming 6-1 6-1. In the doubles, Pukekura won three of four matches. A highlight was Caleb Fleming and Blair Crowley beating Mark Belcher and Tomi Avery in a super tie-break 10-6.

When combines matches were about to begin, Rotokare’s captain Shane Devlin noted that the combination presented by Pukekura wasn’t aligned with the rules and changes were made. The combines wins were split evenly, giving the victory to Pukekura. Unfortunately for Pukekura, Jordan Whittleston was ineligible to play for them. One point was deducted from Pukekura (equivalent to 1 match won by the ineligible player) and awarded to Rotokare. This made the score 8-8; Rotokare got the win on a countback of sets 21-20 and the top of the table.

Okaiawa visited Waiwaka, obtaining a 10-6 win. Stratford hosted Huatoki and won 10-6.
