CHAMBER CHAT

-

“Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.” (Lest we forget the noble sacrifices of our brave soldiers). Today’s problems in a free world are nowhere as severe as what people experienced in the World Wars. However, even in relatively sheltered New Zealand, these problems are the harsh reality on the ground for those who experience them.

Businesses have it tough – yes, we all know many of the contributing causes. High interest rates, the cost of doing business, skills shortages, supply chain disruptions, etc. But it’s really THE PEOPLE (he tangata – the most important entity in the world) behind these businesses, who have it tough! People who are under financial strain, people being laid off work, people without access to decent housing and people without access to decent healthcare.

My key message here is to highlight that people need looking after. Not just your employee or your work colleague, but it could be any of your acquaintances - someone under severe stress, who may not show it. Check in with people you know. Give them your time; give them a patient hearing. It could be a lifesaving gift. Use the services of Tui Ora, Te Whatu Ora, Taranaki Retreat and similar organisations, if required.

Back to business though. Economics 101. Supply and demand. When there is a demand for particular goods or a service, the price rises and suppliers tend to flood the market, until an equilibrium is reached. Think about your business. What is the demand that your business is fulfilling? Are

- you monitoring business conditions to see how the market is moving? Are you aware of the local competition? The national and global competition for that product? How can you stay on top of your game?

Be well informed. Act in good time. Know and develop your core competency. Have a clear competitive advantage. Have a business mentor who can assist.

Above all, feel blessed and grateful that we live in one of the most beautiful regions in the entire world.
