Myers still at blackjack table after passing $1m

- Glenn Mclean

Easy come, easy go, easy come ... big-betting Taranaki blackjack player Tim Myers, who shows no signs of giving up gambling, reached the $1 million mark in winnings, dipped under it, then returned over it, all in the past week.

Myers, who calls himself Tim.naki online, has become an international sensation since February, when he posted on social media that he would bet 10 cents for every Instagram follower he had on one hand of blackjack a day.

Many of his followers believed the end game was the $1 million mark, which he passed at the weekend with all the animation and excitement he has displayed in his 87 daily posts.

However, the former farrier promised to be back to “bet even more” the next day, which he duly did before losing $119,000.

The cards failed to fall on Tuesday, when he lost a further $120,000, prompting many of his followers to urge him to call it a day and ride off into the sunset.

He didn’t, backing those two losses up with consecutive wins to rack up $239,000 in profit once his stakes were subtracted.

In between, Myers has partnered with an online gambling company to promote the “world’s largest blackjack syndicate”, which they plan to run for five consecutive days.

Adding to the attraction for potential punters was the company had guaranteed to refund players’ losses up to the $30 maximum buy-in if Myers lost. “We are going to try and turn this syndicate into as much money as humanly possible,” he said.

Meanwhile, a version of Myers’ signature black cap featuring a silver fern and a neck flap is now for sale online, along with a range of other clothing.
