A selection of letters to the editor of the from the past week.

I’m astonished at the bawdiness of the front page of Wednesday’s

(

May 8).

It should be in the likes of what was the NZ Truth, a muckraking newspaper.

Who wants to know about the brainless schoolboy nonsense written by New Plymouth District Council chief executive Gareth Green online?

My guess is that nobody wants to see it written up on the front page.

This is especially more yuk-full when you turn to page three of the same and you have the writings of Catherine Groenestein about the Parihaka community winning their gardening award and the accompanying great photograph.

This is what should have been put on the front page, showing positive community achievements.

Come on,

The mayor probably needs to keep a sharp eye on yet another bizarrely behaving chief executive.

Like most people, I experience and see lots of things that get me hot under the collar.

Most of it can be put under one heading: wokeism. That is, the ideology by some individuals and groups that their opinion matters more than the truth.

The left-leaning media, which includes this newspaper, is just an example. Look at the cartoons in this paper – they invariably make fun of what is happening in this country.

The changes that the current coalition is making are great and they can’t happen quick enough for me.

To implement common sense in our lives and get rid of the woke rubbish of the previous government is a breath of fresh air that cools the underside of my collar somewhat.

The demise of certain media outlets is welcomed by me. A lot more of them need to report the news, instead of offering their left-wing opinions.

I have no sympathy for the ones that go under and I pray the coalition does not financially support any of them as the Labour Government did.

The ridiculous situation regarding the “rainbow community” with their inane ideas and demands is doing their cause more harm than good.

Let’s get New Zealand back on track. Reinstate proper open-road speed limits. Get mining and drilling back.

Sort out the Treaty fiasco and make us all equal. So many things need to change. I am on the verge of cancelling my

subscription because of its one-sided opinions. Not to mention the lack of good grammar and spell checking. There is a lot more to say, but I do appreciate this opportunity to make a start.

Finally, someone with common sense has designed a decent roundabout at the Westown shopping centre. Thank you.

It is now a pleasure to drive through – views are no longer impeded by greenery or having to negotiate concrete abutments.

Hopefully, that same intelligent person can come up with a satisfactory solution at the Carrington-huatoki intersection, which is a debacle when cars turning right sit in the middle and do not allow the traffic to flow turning left, hence the traffic buildup back past the school.

I won’t hold my breath, though.

Lesley Olley,

Ken C Taylor,

Val Mceldowney,

I understand that the New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) has not increased its stock of 145 pensioner homes to rent for 40 years.

As the city grows and homeownership rates fall, this is going to mean increasing hardship for low-income pensioners forced to pay high market rents.

Sadly, there appears to be no NPDC vision to scale up its provision of pensioner homes to rent.

In effect, councillors are turning their backs on the increasing number of low-income pensioners who are struggling to find suitable and affordable housing.

The NPDC did its very best to cancel my critical concerns during my submission to the 10-year plan review.

It really is time for the council to end its 40-year housing drought by taking much more seriously the need for more pensioner homes to rent.
