Students visit the capital

- DENIS MANSELL, Y13 STUDENT

Nominated as Tauhara College representatives, Lydia White and myself, Denis Mansell, were invited to attend the 2016 Matariki formal reception at Government House last Saturday, which was hosted by Sir Jerry Mateparae and Janine, Lady Mateparae.

The theme for the event was science and innovation.

I had never been to a formal reception before, so this was extremely thrilling for me.

‘‘I’m sure Lydia felt the same way.

I had never been to Wellington before either, so this weekend was indeed a memorable one.

Inside Government House, the ballroom was host to many important looking people in sharp uniforms and suits.

It was all very exciting, with Cook Islands drummers welcoming the guests in.

As the night proceeded, Lydia and I had the high honour of meeting our nation’s GovernorGeneral, Sir Jerry Mateparae.

He’s actually a really nice guy. Even at this formal dinner, he was cracking jokes and mingling with all the college students.

I was able to exchange a mighty handshake with him later on in the night (I haven’t washed that hand since).

The experience that Lydia and I shared was next to none, something to remember for the rest of our lives.

I truly enjoyed it.
