Harvey to represent business
Council candidate Rosie Harvey is making it her business to ensure Taupo’s businesses, big and small, flourish in town.
Co-owner and principal of Harcourts Taupo, Harvey has been in business in Taupo’s CBD for 18 years, and in real-estate for 25.
Harvey said her experience growing and fostering her business in town has given her unique insight into the challenges and needs business owners face in the district, and how to overcome them.
‘‘I am very experienced in business management and managing a team,’’ she said.
‘‘To be effective in council you have to work as a team and be understanding of peoples’ needs.
‘‘I also know how much work people put into their businesses.’’
During the last three years Harvey has been focused on promoting agenda items that benefit business and says she tries to stay out of the politics and focus on what is in front of her.
She enjoys being involved in council committees in order to be involved ‘‘at the grass roots’’ with decisions that will shape the town.
Looking ahead Harvey wants to continue working on relationships to improve business in the community and people.
‘‘It’s about making sure the businesses we have are nurtured and supported by council.’’ she said.
‘‘If they need some more backing, or need something to grow I do not want to be an inhibitor to that.’’
Harvey wants to ensure start-up business ideas are also supported.
‘‘If it’s a new business we have to do what we can to encourage them,’’ she said.
‘‘I get frustrated sometimes when prospective entrepreneurs want to set up business venture, and not all councillors understand the significance of encouraging competition in town.’’
Harvey said the appointment of the new ceo Gareth Green is a good opportunity to really shape Taupo into a leading town in New Zealand.
‘‘I am vey excited about working with Gareth and the new council team,’’ she said.
‘‘I think he has got the district’s interest at heart.’’
