Conrad made for Formula First racing

- STEPH RANGI

Conrad Clark has continued to make a name for himself in the world of formula racing, finishing in the top five in the last two rounds.

Embarking on his Hi-Q Components NZ Formula First Championship racing earlier this year, 14-year-old Conrad has proven he is a natural.

During his first round of the Winter Series, Conrad managed to secure a win and a second placing. A mechanical failure finished his third race early.

‘‘It was good to get a win on debut,’’ Conrad said.

‘‘But the mechanical failure put us out on day three.’’

Then round two saw Conrad finish with two second placings and a first. The second round gave him a bit more of a learning experience.

‘‘It was pretty good to get a good set up and figuring out the car in the wet.’’

Round three kicks off next month but that doesn’t mean Conrad gets to relax.

‘‘I’ve been doing a bit of homework for the owner,’’ he said.

‘‘I have to look at videos of previous drivers and learn from them.’’

And he has learned a fair bit from the videos.

‘‘I’ve been learning quite a bit. I sit there and study them, then take it back and do it on the track.’’

Taking on Formula First has been a good experience for Conrad and he feels it will lead him in the right direction further on down the track.

‘‘It’s really good fun, it’s something different,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s definitely the step to start my career and getting where I want to be.’’

With only two rounds left of the Winter Series, Conrad is keen to make some decent points to help sit him in first place.

‘‘Because of the mechanical failure in the first round we are currently sitting in second place with 38 points behind the leader,’’ he said.

‘‘I’ve got to keep working at it to get that top spot.’’

Conrad has only been racing 12 North Island racers but is keen to up the ante in the future.

After the Winter Series, Conrad will hit the track for the National Championships where he will race in eight rounds.

Conrad hopes to end up in Australia and racing over there in the near future.
