Churches offering isolation support

- MATTHEW MARTIN

A Covid isolation support service set up by a group of Taupō churches has helped about 130 families during the latest outbreak of the disease.

The hub was set up near the start of the Omicron outbreak in February, but spokesperson Lynelle Laws said there was still a lot of work to do to support locals in isolation.

‘‘Currently, Taupō is experiencing Covid outbreaks throughout all levels of schooling, leaving many households isolating,’’ Laws said.

‘‘Businesses and workplaces are also obviously impacted in our small town.

‘‘No matter who you are or what your circumstances, it is a comfort to know that a home cooked frozen meal and other essential food supplies and activities for the children are on offer.’’

She said at last count, 130 families made up of 273 adults and 287 children had received support from the group.

Taupō’s Salvation Army, Seventh Day Adventist Church, St Patrick’s Catholic Church, C3 Church, Advance Church, and the Church at 109, among others, are all part of the support hub that is providing nondenominational support to anyone facing difficulties with the disease in Taupō, regardless of vaccination status.

Laws said since the beginning of the latest outbreak, about 120 parcels had been delivered by volunteers, and donations of food, money, meat and vouchers had been received from individuals, churches and local businesses.

‘‘A stand-out for me has been the seamless co-ordination and support of many local groups and volunteers who have come together to offer support.

‘‘My heart goes out to the raspy voices on the other end of the phone as the person accessing this service confirms they are affected by Covid, and without fail offers grateful thanks for the food and activities provided,’’ she said.

‘‘The shepherd’s pie was absolutely delicious,’’ one Covidsufferer said. ‘‘The donated box of goods was a huge help as I couldn’t buy enough food to get us through.

‘‘It was absolutely amazing. My daughter really enjoyed her activity too. I thank you all again.’’

The support hub was established to provide responsive, local support for people who are isolating or facing challenges during the pandemic and aims to work in conjunction with services already offered by the Lakes District Health Board, local government and nongovernmental organisations.

People can access help with food, friendship, and other practical support needs, along with a video by Paediatrician Dr Belinda Coulter on things to consider when required to isolate.
