Liquor ban in effect over holiday period

- Phil Edwards

the Taupo¯ District Liquor Control Bylaws in public places. Evidence tells us that intoxicated people within our CBD and other public areas become offenders of crime or sadly victims of crime. Further evidence and experience also tell us that bottles brought into these areas are often used as weapons when egos mixed with alcohol are challenged. Because of that sobering evidence there is a local liquor ban in place. I don’t want to see people locked up or in hospital because they have been a victim of an assault; so I need your help to spread the word among your families, employees, mates and any visitors to Taupo¯ that we have a liquor ban in place. We have staff rostered and tasked with patrolling these areas during these times and will be enforcing this ban — the maximum penalty is $20,000. Therefore a reminder to you all that the period starts 4pm every Thursday until 7am every Monday, and all public holidays there is still a ban in place. For New Year celebrations, the ban is in place from 12 noon on December 27 to 7am on January 4. This ban includes the lakefront reserve, Nukuhau Boat reserve and beach reserves at Acacia Bay, Two, Three, Four and Five Mile Bays, the public swimming beach area off Rauhoto St, Reid’s Farm and Kinloch lakefront reserve. Copies of the bylaw are available at the Taupo¯ District Council. holiday home was broken into. Taupo¯ is a popular destination for holiday homes and it is great that we have those opportunities in our town. We need the help of neighbours in areas where these homes are present to give us a bell if anyone suspicious is seen in the area. If you are a holiday home owner and are looking for ways to prevent your property being vandalised or broken into, have a look at our website for some tips: www.police.govt.nz/ advice/personal-community/ protect-property-vehicles or give us a call here at the Taupo¯ station.
