Taupo¯ Tramping Club

-

Trampers on a mission — four of us recently completed a two-day trip into the Cascade Hut from Clements Mill Rd end, the purpose being to evaluate the hut for some maintenance for DoC and also carry out a fair bit of track clearing on the way in and out. Carrying big packs it was tough going but we were very happy to do our bit. However, a chainsaw was required for three large trees we came across. It was a cool trip. We eyeballed a young hind at 15m for a good 40 seconds and we also had a good look at a pair of whio and their chicks. I deeply regret deciding not to lug in a bottle of red to share around the fire during the very relaxing evening we had. Never heard the end of that really! For information on the Taupo¯ Tramping Club, phone Bernie on 377 4081. to the latter popular camping spot, a little-used track was followed to the redwoods forested area where a solo camper surprisingly encountered exhibited the appearance of a rough sleeper. While little of that beaming sun was visible in the trees, the calm conditions ensured the early required outer layers were quickly discarded. Completing several loops within the trees, the way home followed a shared track that signage indicated was a Huka Falls to town track. There was some open country to be traversed here before a short transit through the building bustle of Huka Heights development. For more information on these intended two hour walks, which begin at 9.30am, telephone Bernie on 378 9229.
