Taupo¯ wins the Ironman

-

November 2020 will bring the largest event that Taupo¯ has seen when the two-day Ironman 70.3 World Championships come to town.

The announcement was made last Friday in the lead-up the Ironman World Championship at Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Taupo¯ was selected over Perth, Australia, following a robust application process and a visit by Ironman Global representatives in June.

It is estimated the event on November 28 and 29 2020 will bring an economic return of $20 million to the district, two thirds of the return events normally attract over the whole year. It is the first time the Championship will be held in New Zealand and only the second time in Oceania.

Taupo¯ District Mayor David Trewavas said hosting the globally-rotating event was a major coup as it would thrust the district on to the world stage.

“The two-day event attracts around 5000 competitors, 13,500 supporters and attracts media from all four corners of the globe,” he said.“This is as big as it is ever going to get.”
