Some 72 men vet golfers took part in day one of the annual Taupo¯ Golf Club Vets’ Tournament on Centennial and Tauhara Courses in windy but fine conditions on November 5. There were 23 golfers from Taupo¯ and 49 from around New Zealand. The tournament comprises match play for five groups of 16 over Monday, Tuesday, Thursday concluding on Friday. For the women vet golfers there is a stableford comp over four days with 31 visitors and 14 locals. Nine hole is also being competed for with a stableford. The naming sponsor is Harcourts Taupo¯ (Tim Bland) with many other local sponsors. The prizegivin­g is at the Taupo¯ Golf Club Lounge on Friday at about 2pm. Last week 44 vet golfers participat­ed in a teams stableford event (hidden flag) on Centennial for the Robin Hocking Trophy in fine and warm conditions. Six teams shared the prize list. First “Some come Late!” of Dave Nixon, Baxter Fagan , Ralph Robertshaw­e and Hugh DeLautour with 114 stableford points. 2nd with 101 points included Peter Crawford, Graham Woodcock, Roger Menzies and Dennis Tito of the “Forgotten Ones” team. Third the “Jabs” Team of Phil Woodward, John Chapman , Blair Major and Athol Lonsdale with 99 points. Fourth also with 99 points “Bad Habits” — Selwyn McLennan, Neil Murley, Tony Seavill and Tim Paterson. Fifth also with 99 points-“4 Knobs team — of Gordon Harvey, Peter Coles, David Mansell and Colin Crowe. Sixth with 95 points the team of “Plonkers” including Ted Swanney, Richard Shearer, Mike Corkin and Les Wraight.

Best Gross went to John Roberts with an 82. Junior Gross was Ralph Robertshaw­e with a 99. Twos Hole No. 3 Peter Coles. Hole No. 12 Tim Paterson. Bottle’O voucher went to Dave Nixon. 4 Senior Vets/9 Holers played on Tauhara. Winner was David Mayne with 17 points. Runner up with 15 points was Dermot Grainger.

We regret the passing of Ivan Rudd, a Vet Golf Member over many years and extend our sympathy to Maggie Rudd. rest of the field played a stableford. Top Cat winner was Margery MacDonald and the runner up was Fran Fuller. Chris Thomson won the stableford with 38 points. Bar Hoadley was second on countback to Yvonne RauretiCar­son with both golfers scoring 35 points. Runners up were Beryl Paterson, Fran Fuller and Anna Brabyn. Nearest to the pins were won by Chris Thomson, the Mole’ n’ Chicken voucher, Yvonne Raureti-Carson, the Victoria’s Cafe´ prize and Beryl Paterson won the Bottle’O prize. The Pro shop longest putt was won by Bar Hoadley. The Merchant of Taupo¯ raffle was won by Gail Searle.
