Concert fills kids’ bellies

- Rachel Canning

The Full Puku Project — which provides meals in the weekend for children — won the staff vote for the charity to benefit from an upcoming open-air Christmas concert in the Lava Glass sculpture garden.

Lava Glass owner Christine Robb said they wanted to give to a local charity and The Full Puku Project was a good fit.

“They make 50 to 100 meals a week, and will use the money to put together hampers for local families who may struggle through the Christmas period,” says Christine.

She says the charity’s main focus is to provide food for vulnerable children, making sure they get nutrition.

“The team at The Full Puku Project sets up meal stations in selected areas at certain times during weekends, and the kids come and collect a meal.” She is particularly impressed with the judgement-free policy, where the kids receiving the food are not judged in any way.

“I also like the fact that they act in compliance with health and safety standards to ensure the food they serve is safe for the kids. As cafe´ owners ourselves, we know how important this is.”

The concert will feature young Taupo¯ musician Michaela Pointon, and Christine says the singersongwriter will delight the audience with her cheerful repertoire of cover and original songs.

Glass blower Chris Jones and glass blower and co-owner Lynden Over have both made pieces for the concert to be raffled off.

“Lynden and Chris have made a gorgeous pieces of glass art and the money raised from the raffle tickets will go directly to The Full Puku Project.”

The Lava Glass Sculpture Garden features more than 600 handcrafted glass sculptures.

Lynden says they are proud to be supporting local charities especially at Christmas.

“We know there are families who need a little helping hand at Christmas,” says Lynden.

Admission to the concert is $20 per person with $10 per ticket going directly to The Full Puku Project.

The admission fee includes a snack box, with sweet and savoury treats to be eaten in the garden while enjoying the Christmas cheer.

■ The Lava Glass charity concert will be held from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday, December 9. Tickets are $20 available at the door. Lava Glass Gallery is at 165 SH5, Wairakei, Taupo¯.
