MĀORI WORD OF THE WEEK
The Taupo¯ & Tu¯rangi Weekender supports Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Ma¯ori, the Ma¯ori Language Commission’s campaign to increase New Zealanders’ te reo Ma¯ori vocabulary by running a different Ma¯ori word to learn each week.
This week’s word: titiro
(tirohia) - look
Kei te titiro au ki te tamaiti e menemene mai ana.
I am looking at the child who is smiling at me. titiro usually takes ‘ki’ rather than ‘i’ – it does occur with ‘i’ and means to look at closely, to study. Kua tirohia nga¯ ta¯onga e nga¯ tauira.
The artefacts have been looked at by the students.
