Taupo & Turangi Weekender - - News -

Although I had some criticisms when Mr Cooper was mayor of a similar scheme he supported for Taupo¯ District Council to build on Tongariro North Domain I can see possibilities in renting council space in a new building in Horomatangi St ( Taupo¯ & Tu¯rangi Weekender, December 13). Recently there has been comment about amalgamating Waikato councils which would obviously lead to a downsize, so a rental option would offer flexibility. I believe a building at County Ave using proceeds already dedicated from the sale of 72 Lake Tce, and the two sections in Rifle Range Rd has merit as well. The car parking problems in town are bound to get worse, making retail development near Mitre 10 and the East Urban Lands attractive.

The one good thing that council has generated is discussion that if they are sensible they will take notice. The option B council favours against the public’s majority opinion looks to have big problems.

It appears museum demolition will only provide the space the current building occupies as a slightly lower specification reserve, but is surrounded by defined recreational reserve that is inviolate. A sort of Merchant of Venice situation where if council wants its pound of flesh it must not take an ounce of blood represented by unavailable Crown recreational reserve!
