Join in summer series

Taupo & Turangi Weekender - - News | Police -

Get on your bike and ride! Taupo¯ Mountain Bike Club’s weekly Summer Series sponsored by Pack & Pedal starts on Thursday, January 17 and runs for 10 consecutive weeks through to March 21.

The series caters for all levels of riders from beginners through to experienced racers and with its social focus, many people participate simply to meet other riders and enjoy the family atmosphere, says series organiser Paula Pietersma.

There are two timed courses on offer for adults and youths — the short course (8km) is on grade 2 and 3 trails and for those looking for a bit more of a challenge the long course (12km) tackles an extra climb or two and has a more technical trail. E-bikers are welcome to ride the long course, too, and are timed as a separate category.

For kids the Rockets course is around 5km on grade 2 track and the Sprockets course is around 3km on Grade 2 track.

“These races are not timed as it is more about the kids getting out and having fun and building up their skills to be able to ride in the timed courses,” says Paula.

Both trails are kept separate from the other trails and an adult mountain biker always leads the group with another following at the back. Young children and those on runner bikes are accompanied by their parents.

Spot prizes will be given out on some evenings and food and refreshments will be available each week. Entrants meet and register at the Hub area by the new underpass near Craters Mountain Bike Park. Registration is from 5.15pm to 5.45pm and races start from 6pm.
