Kids organise their own planting day

Plant like a Ninja!

It’s on Youtube and it’s the way Kids Greening Taupo¯ (KGT) have been training other kids how to plant trees.

Kids Greening Taupo¯ coordinator Sian Moffitt says its important that the trees are planted correctly.

“First you tickle the roots, introduce yourself to the plant and then karate chop the roots, then do a shuffle around the plant to compact the dirt.”

Kids Greening Taupo¯ has organised a community planting day at Spa Park on Sunday with 2000 plants, and Sian says they expect many to come along.

“We expect a lot of students will come along to support their peers. Hopefully all their mates will turn up.”

A core value for KGT is to enable young people to connect with and take action for their local environment alongside their community and planning and executing a community planting day was one of the things the student leadership team committed to when they signed up.

Kids Greening Taupo¯ chair Kensie Gard, 14, says the student leaders have planned the planting event and will set it up, run it and pack everything up as well as showing people how to plant correctly and check the plantings afterwards. There will also be a student-run raffle, sausage sizzle and music.

Everybody is welcome and Sian says it is also important to the student leaders that their friends and the KGT community supporters are there.

“Roles were nominated, homework was required. They want it to be how they want.”
