MA¯ ORI WORD OF THE WEEK

-

The Taupo¯ & Tu¯ rangi Weekender supports Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Ma¯ ori, the Ma¯ ori Language Commission’s campaign to increase New Zealanders’ te reo Ma¯ ori vocabulary by running a different Ma¯ ori word to learn each week. This week’s word: Mauri mahi, mauri ora - "Do the mahi, get the treats" (through work, we prosper)

The full whakatauk¯ı (‘Ma¯ ori proverb’) is: “Mauri mahi, mauri ora; mauri noho, mauri mate” – Industry begets prosperity; idleness begets poverty.
