One stolen puppy still missing

-

One of the puppies stolen from Tu¯ rangi Animal Care nearly two weeks ago was found last weekend, but her littermate is still missing.

Puppies Star and Gypsy, a pair of bearded collie-cross pups were stolen from the charity’s shelter on Friday, November 22 after thieves cut through the perimeter fence.

Appeals for their return on social media and in the newspaper have so far reached over 90,000 people.

Animal Care Tu¯ rangi manager Stacy Lewis says Gypsy was found in Tu¯ rangi last Sunday morning, dirty, hungry and frightened.

“I got a message on Sunday morning from a woman saying she heard her dog barking at something outside the front door and she opened the door and found Gypsy on the porch.

“She brought her in and a family member recognised her from the Facebook posts and rang me.”

Stacy took Gypsy away and gave her a bath and some food. The puppy is now in quarantine because of the prevalence of parvovirus in Tu¯ rangi but Stacy says she is doing well.

Stacy says finding Gypsy means that Star may still be in the local area and be found too.

“This gives us some hope.” She is worried about Star’s health though, as the puppy had had a wound on her tail which would require surgery if it did not heal.

She says Animal Care Tu¯ rangi has been in talks with the Taupo¯ District Council about possible extra perimeter fencing. The committee is looking for quotes for more security but it is not going to be cheap, as the cost just for the Wi-Fi required will be $80 per month.
