Family catch to feature on new licences

- — Mary Inwood

An image capturing the excitement of a mother and son, each holding a rainbow trout following a double hook-up at The Delta, a popular spot on Lake Taupo¯, is the winner of this year’s Department of Conservation Taupo¯ fishery photo competition.

The image, by Hamish Timmins of Wellington, will feature on the printed plastic licences for the Taupo¯ fishery.

Six additional winners’ photos will be used to illustrate a range of licence options which feature in the online store or on 24-hour paper licences.

Hamish says the picture of his wife Abigail and son Julian, then 8, was taken last year. It was the first taste of fly fishing for his children, although he has been fishing the south end of Lake Taupo¯ on and off for 25 years.

Competition prizes were family season licences, which sets the winners up nicely for the new Taupo¯ fishing season which begins July 1.

A variety of licence categories are available at the Taupo¯ fishery online licence store www.doc.govt.nz/ fishinglicence

During the weekend of May 29 and 30, Tu¯ rangi’s Church of the Cross held its Jubilee +1 Celebrations.

The congregation of past and present members came together that Saturday evening to celebrate the 51 years of the church standing in the town centre by the tall cross. The cross was erected in the late 1960s when the church was built as a sign of the church communities coming together for worship and fellowship (Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian), though many other faiths have joined with us throughout the years and still continue to do so.

The theme was the Fishers of Men and the weekend began with a shared meal of fish and chips in the lounge along with much sharing of stories and laughter. Friendships renewed and made was the order of the night.

Sunday dawned cool but fine and even the sun made it through to greet the folk as they gathered for the service of celebration. Mary Inwood, chair of the committee, opened the service with a brief outline of the history before handing over to the team of local and visiting ministers all of whom represented the three partners involved with the church. A special thanks was given to the Rev Paul Williamson, regional dean for the Anglican Church, for sharing his final service with us before he retired.

It was great to see many of the locals and past locals joining us and especially Mayor David Trewavas.

It may have been a year overdue but thanks to those who came and shared, it was well worth waiting for. A thank you for time past, a new beginning for the time to come.
