Mild conditions silver lining for cloudy days

Taupo¯ Marist victors in try-for-try thriller

- With Bevan Choat

Averaging 15C during the day and 6.3C at night, last week, although cloudy, was more than pleasant. In fact the daytime temperatures were 2.5C warmer for the time of year and the night-time minimum temperatures were more than 6 degrees above the June average.

It was a week of not only milder temperatures, but foggy mornings and cloudy days. Mainly light, misty drizzle fell during the week and there was a lack of bright sunshine. Barometric pressures remained very high, which often reflects the weather conditions that prevailed. The only rain of any significance fell on Sunday, June 6, but the weather still remains mostly dry. This week should herald a change to more rainy conditions and I do not expect a lot of wind. Temperatures should be slightly cooler, but the real chills of winter are yet to come.

Tongariro on home soil last Saturday — what a beautiful day of rugby, great games, massive support, yummy kai, stunning weather and happy tamariki — great success. Thank you to everyone for your mahi and support this weekend.

Tongariro U6 Pango v Taupo¯ Marist

Our kids played amazingly considering some had only recovered from being mauiui, or had been out hunting. Although a close try-for-try game, we ended up going down by two tries. Up-and-coming footy stars Piki and her big sister Maioha Ngata were awarded with our Being Brave and Playing Awesome award. Ripper of the day went to Raymond Collier who has been improving each week. Good work Ray, he even managed to score his first try. Player of the Day sponsored by Marina Marshall went to Neeve Collier. Being one of our younger players, she put her hand up to run throughout the game, chased all day and was rewarded with a welldeserved try. Great organising by our Junior Rugby Committee, and thanks to our parents, aunties, uncles, koro and Nanny who came to watch. Well done tamariki, you make us proud each week by showing up and giving it your all. Lauren

Tongariro U6 Sharks

The Sharks had their first win of the season on Saturday, with our team putting their all into the game and showing off their skills. Player of the day sponsored by Marina Marshall went to Hamiora EruWikotu, who displayed amazing defensive and attacking skills throughout the whole game. Ripper of the day sponsored by Konui-Winitana wha¯nau went to Atutahi KonuiWinitana, who made amazing metres to make the rips. Thank you to those behind the scenes who help to make everything run so smoothly. Melissa

Waitahanui ki Tongariro

Good to play our second home game for the season in Tu¯ rangi with nice weather. Our team fought hard against Sports Grenades and all our players put a lot of effort into the game but it wasn't enough to come away with a win, going down 9-12 to them. Player of the day award, sponsored by Marina Marshall, was awarded to Diamond Habib-Rameka for his chases and commitment to ripping just before the try line, miharo rawa e tama! Fair play award went to Manu Hallett-Hemapo. Hinepare

U7 Tigers

Player of the day went to Winter Cockburn for showing awesome commitment to making his rips and his metres down the field for his tries. Ripper of the day went to Boston Tamepo with lots of dedication throughout his whole game. Dulu

U7 Stallions

The Stallions are doing really well together, working good as a team and putting into action on game days what they are taught at trainings and able to execute tasks. For that we achieved our 13-6 win over the Giants. Hoata Mackie was the ripper of the

day with her sticky hands. Te Aotaki Jacobs was player of the day with his magnificent running. Darling

U9 Sikas v United Rebels

The Sikas unfortunately went down 14-10. They started off with a couple of early tries but United came back squaring it up 5-all at halftime. Again the Sikas took the lead with some good individual skills from a couple of our second-year kids. United ended up taking the game from us near the end due to fatigue and little mistakes, which we can work on at training this week. Top tackle count went to Ted Robertson followed by Manaaki Hallett close behind. Our kaitakaro o te ra sponsored by nanny Marina Marshall and koro MacDonald went to John Paul Tahau for his barnstorming runs and good go-forward ball. Special mention to all our first-year tackling kids again who are showing us that the defence drills they are learning at training are paying off on the field and building their confidence. Also nga¯ mihi to everyone that helped with setting up of fields and prepping and running of our kai stall. Ka rawe wha¯nau, mauri ora. Boss

Tongariro U9s Red v Marist

Coming together every weekend is a commitment we love to see from our team and we are very proud of their determination. No win for our U9 Reds but they definitely gave it their best! Fulltime score was 11-0 to Marist. Player of the day went to Emillie Kiel for her solid performance throughout the game. Tackler of the day went to Richard Kiel for his consistency in making every tackle! Massive shout out to the committee and all our wha¯nau for your hard work in the weekend. Sanya

Tongariro U11 Colts v Taupo¯ Sports Kaha

With a slow start from our starting line up it took a while to get into the game. We had to make some quick changes to recover from the early pressure from Kaha. One of the changes was Hunter Robertson: small in size, big in bite, he brought the energy needed to turn the game around and he was our backs player of the day. Forwards player of the day was Tristan Hargreaves, new to the forwards this year but doesn't look out of place at all picking up some valuable steals and getting a few good tries. Our large squad is working hard together from 1 to 24 and we picked up a 13-9 win. Quinn

Tongariro U13s v Otorohanga

It was a hard-fought game that could have gone either way. Otorohanga had some big players and our team felt what it was like to take some big hits. Man of the match went to one of the smaller players in the team, Isaiah Te Kira Thompson, who showed heaps of heart and executed what was asked of him. The final score was 17-10 to Otorohanga.
