POLICE REPORT

- Te Reipa Morunga Tū rangi police sergeant

Kia ora koutou.

It’s been a while since my last report and our station has been busy with the peaks and troughs of crime in our community.

We saw a rise in burglaries in our town, mainly at holiday homes and garages, especially around the Taupahi Road area. Items being targeted were alcohol and garage/ gardening tools, viewed through windows or just in plain sight.

We also had a vehicle broken into with several items stolen.

Last week, we arrested a local 16-yearold who is now facing multiple burglaries charges relating to these incidences around town.

To help us prevent this type of opportunistic crime, can I ask you to have a look at your security?

Think about your habits when securing your property or leaving your house. An easy win is having anything of value out of view, maintaining good relationships with your neighbours and getting people to check your address. New alarm systems and remote camera monitoring systems can help a lot and these systems are getting much more affordable. We’ve had good results when home owners call us while watching suspicious people on their property, and it gives us good evidential material for a prosecution.

The Turangi police team and I are more than happy to discuss your home security especially around CPTED, crime prevention through environmental design .

Speed on our highways is still an issue, vehicles are being driven way too fast for the conditions, well in excess of the posted speed limits. The Turangi and Taupo police team will be out on the roads focusing on people driving without restraints, driving while impaired (by alcohol, drugs, and fatigue), driving distracted (mobile phones), and speeding.

Finally with my Turangi Blue Light hat on we have our Taupo Locals Day on Saturday and we still have seats left. We will be doing the Huka Jet, Chris Jolly Cruise to the Ma¨ ori rock carvings, lunch at AC Baths with slides and then popcorn and icecream watching the movie Black Adam. We would like to thank our major sponsor, Bay Trust, which makes these trips affordable for our families.

Tū rangi youth can come to the Tū rangi police station for an application form. The whole day is only $30.

Noho ora mai.
