The local champion team of skip Steve Lee, director Jim Fitzsimons, Rick Whittaker (2) and lead Grahame Velvin, won the rain-reduced glamour lawn bowls event — the Val Duncan Great Lake Classic — at the weekend.

Alex Jones, Ray Scott, Brian Godber and John Kearns from Omarauni, Hawke’s Bay, took the second major prize, with Barbara Exeter, Phil Lamason, Ruth Spittle and Dave Roberts from Taradale gaining third.

Play was restricted to just the one day on Saturday, featuring two games of fours and two games of pairs. The Sunday triples and singles were washed out. Meanwhile the ever-consistent Vern Hobbs, in tandem with recently joined member John Meleisea, jointly took out the top prize in last Thursday’s 2x4x2 pairs after returning two wins, 13 winning ends and 20 points.

Club manager Jim Fitzsimons and Darryl Cash were second (2/18/14) and Val Mikkelson and Colin Light were the third prize winners, win and draw/18/13.

The tournament attracted quality bowlers from Taupō and beyond. Tournament sponsor and life member Val Duncan presented the prizes. Sandra Burrows and Mark Mikkelson took out the drawn prize.
