Win makes Sarah’s day
Sunday could have been a sad day for local woman Sarah Hedges — instead she decided to make it a memorable day in honour of her late mother.
In January Sarah lost her mum Sharon Horn to cancer.
Sunday would have been her birthday — so instead of being overcome with sadness, she put on her best frock, got the lippy on and with her mum’s pearls to complete the look headed for the Waikato All Ford Day in Hamilton to enjoy the sun, classic cars and to enter the Miss Retro Competition.
The icing on the cake was winning the event — a sash and $200.
“It was my first ever pageant and I think Mum would have been proud of me,” says Sarah.
“It was a sad/happy day.” Sarah says the cash will go straight into buying more material for more outfits.
She has always liked the vintage, 50s ‘pin-up’ look but only started wearing it every day, complete with the hair-do and accessories, a couple of years ago.
As a seamstress she makes all her own clothes, inspired by the growing circle of friends who embrace the culture and also by the myriad of online resources.
But she’s strictly hands-on when it comes to material.
“I don’t buy online — I like to feel it before I buy it,” she says.
Op-shops and antique stores are her friends for accessories.
The look originated in Europe, but the glamour ‘pin-up’ side was popularised in the United States.
Sarah says there are lots of opportunities to make the most of the look now with other girls.
Hot rod and classic car shows, rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly events, retro and vintage markets and shows — usually a combination of events — all feature on the busy ‘retro’ calendar.
The next big event is The Very Vintage day Out at Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds which will be held over the weekend of November 3 and 4.
