Brown leads division

Andrew Brown shot an even par 72 gross in round one of the strokeplay championsh­ips at Te Awamutu Golf Club.

The 10 handicappe­r followed up with an 83 in round two on Sunday for a two round total of 155.

Brown leads the intermedia­te division by a whopping 14 shots going into next weekend’s final two rounds. He was out in 37 and home in 35 on Saturday. His front nine comprised six pars, a birdy on the fourth and bogeys on six and eight, followed by eight pars and a birdy on 11 on the back nine.

Tim Crotty (81, 88, 169) and John Mortland (83, 86, 169) are his nearest challenger­s.

The senior division were unable to match Brown’s hot scoring.

Michael MacDonald (79, 77, 156) heads the field, well clear of Stuart Towers (83, 82, 165).

Clint Rowe matched MacDonald’s 79 on Saturday but was unable to play on Sunday. He is still very much in the contest — the strokeplay is decided over the best three of four rounds.

Allan Duncan (89, 85, 174) heads the junior division by five shots from Ray Davies (91, 88, 179).

Andrew Brown won Saturday’s All Day Scramble gross with his 72. The stableford was won by Tim Crotty with 42 points, from Sylvia Gooch, John Mortland 39, Gordon Kirkham, Ray Davies, Allan Duncan, Mel Brown, Bruce Webster 37, Ross Riddel, Clinton Rowe 36.

The solitary two was scored by Andrew Brown.

Winners of Sunday’s club day scramble were Michael MacDonald with 77 gross, Bill Hawira 62 nett, Jeff Bowers 44 stableford, Welby Murrell 43, Allan Duncan 41, Ray Davies 40.

Open midweek tournament winners were Edward Kay with a fiveover-par 77 gross, Rewa Hawira 45 stableford, Percy Kapa, Jim Kirkham 42, John Staples 41, Bill Hawira 39, Gordon Kirkham 38.

Twos were scored by Staples and Thomas Craig.

Welby Murrell streeted his rivals with 47 stableford points in the Best of the Vets scramble last Thursday, finishing five points clear of the runner-up George Vanner on 43, followed by Les Common, Roy Greenhalgh with 42, Peter Emery 40, Denis Brewer, Herman Oosterman 39, Howard Wynyard 38.

Leading Saturday ladies were Karen Campton with 43 stableford, Thora Young, Sylvia Gooch, Christine Lloyd 39, Sally Davies 37, Mary Strack 36.
