Driver breached licence conditions

- BY DEAN TAYLOR

Two of the core responsibilities of traffic policing are intersection safety and driver licensing compliance — and a crash on Friday night highlighted both issues.

A team of officers was required at the Alexandra/ Mutu/Rewi Streets roundabout when a male driver breaching his licence conditions failed to give way as he drove westward and T-boned a vehicle heading from Mutu Street onto Rewi Street.

Senior Constable Mark Strongman says the crash caused serious damage to both vehicles and injuries to the woman driver.

They shut the road until an ambulance arrived and paramedics were able to attend to the woman.

Mark says luckily she wasn’t badly injured — but is very sore as a result.

He says staff had to control patrons from the adjacent bar and keep the road closed for everyone’s safety until the vehicles were removed.

He says it is a reminder of why there are rules around new drivers, especially in relation to time restrictions and passengers, who can be distracting to inexperienced drivers.
