Big winners Cogswell wins Race to 500 in golf trophy
Jonathan Makush and Helen Parker were the big winners in the annual Bill Knight Closed Christmas Tournament at Stewart Alexander Golf Club.
Makush won the Bill Knight Trophy with a hot 58 nett.
The 29 handicapper was out in 43 and home in 44 for an 87 gross including four pars.
Parker took out thewomen’s Agnes Knight Trophy with a 69 nett. The 31 handicapper had halves of 53 and 47. Highlights of her rounds were pars on the eighth and 11th holes.
Division one (for those on handicaps 0-17.9) was headed by Ian Berry with a two-over-par 72 gross.
Shayne Ashford won the nett with 65, from Dean Scott, Gary Grylls, Bill Garvin 66, John Hollinshead, Carl Miezenbeek 67.
Leading nett scorers in division 2 (18-36 handicaps) were Jack Muriwai with 62, George King 65, Dillon Tupaea, Dave Herbert 66, Michael Herbert 66, Dave Coupland 67.
Sue Pollock, with 74 nett and Debbie Pitcon, with 78, headed the ladies’ scramble.
Twos were by Ian Berry, Roger Neal, Shayne Ashford, George King, Keith Mitchell.
The NEC jackpot was struck by Dillon Tupaea on 15.
Ron Cogswell won the winner’s purse of $500 in the yearlong Race to 500 competition at Pirongia Golf Club.
The final of the Kumar Holdings-sponsored event was won by Cogswell with 39 stableford points on Sunday.
Jack Hjorth won second prize money of $150 with 36 points. Third place and $100 went to Scott Lawwith 35 stableford. Fourth prize of $70 went to Derek Boyle with 33 points.
The final was played in conjunction with the Tray Parkes Trophy nett competition for men and women. Phillip Eyre emerged the men’s winner with a round of 66 and Denise Goile the women’s winner with 73 nett.
The senior scramble was won by Philip Eyre with 66 nett, from Ken Bardsley 67, Kevin Appleby 68, Steve Law 70.
Dave Lamb headed the junior scramble with 68, Paul Davie, Charlie Coles 69, Ron Cogswell 70.
Charlie Coles struck the junior jackpot worth $200 with a two and a birdie. Scott Law and Barry Cavey also scored twos.
Closest to pin went to Dave Seager. Longest putt winner was Terry Charlesworth.
