Towers beats her male rivals to win golf club scramble
Jenny Towers upstaged a field of mostly male competitors with 46 stableford points in Sunday’s scramble at Te Awamutu Golf Club.
The 26 handicapper’s nearest rivals were Peter McGowan and Craig Meacheam on 43 points, Ray Davies 41 and Howard Wynyard 40. Towers’ round of 89 gross (halves of 45, 44) included six pars. Pennant representative Clinton Rowe shot a five-overpar 77 to win the gross.
Open midweek tournament winners were Percy Kapa with an 82 gross, John Staples 41 stableford, Les Common 37.
Best of the Vets were Robin Thompson with 44 stableford, Allen Rounthwaite 43, John Tart 42, Murray Johnson 40.
Rounthwaite won the previous week’s Vets scramble with 44 points, from Barry Ross 42, Gerald Lane, Herman Oosterman 41, Toby Thomson 40.
The shoot out event attracted 18 qualifiers on Saturday, all eager to capture the worthwhile winner and runner-up prizes ranging from $300 down to $10. The winner was 13 handicapper Steve Dewet who held out from Dave Trutsch on the 18th hole.
