Local upstages Irish champion

Logan Griffin upstaged Irish champion Ryan Mullins winning Te Awamutu Sports Cycling Club’s summer series-ending time trial.

Griffin beat a star-studded field, covering the 11km out-andback course taking in Te Rahu Rd and Storey Rd in 13.47 minutes, averaging a fraction under 48kph.

Mullins was second fastest of the 23 A graders, clocking 13.57.

Rounding out the top six were Bernie McGrath 14.06, Hayden McCormick 14.07, Alex Heaney 14.21 and Sam Dobbs 14.26. Griffin and James Harvey finished the Spoken Cycle’s sponsored summer series equal top of the overall leaderboar­d on 80 points. Griffin took the overall A grade summer series with his superior TT (time trial) placing — Harvey finished 17th in 15.06.

Heaney claimed third prize with 78 points.

George Jackson went into the TT holding second place but finished out of the money after placing 15th in the series finale.

Mike Gilbert took out the B grade series with 134 points, from Blair Taylor 122 and Tait Somervell 112. The trio cemented their overall placings with creditable time trials — Taylor placing second with a time of 15.22, Gilbert third in 15.33 and Somervell eighth in 16.18.

The B grade TT winner Logan Holzer was 16 seconds faster than his nearest rival, clocking 15.06.

Teenager Blake Bailey, in his debut season of grade racing, finished an eye-catching fourth overall in B grade with 105 points.

Graham Bunn was clearly the stand out C grade rider, winning both the TT and overall series. His TT time of 16.58 was 16 seconds faster than second placed Kate McCathy, and his 123 points was 15 superior to that of the series runner-up MacKenzie Macky, third in the TT in 17.23.

Ted Schmidt was third placed C grader overall with 81 points after placing sixth in the TT.

Basil Treymane took the D grade double, winning the TT in 17.56 and overall series with 130 points, from Dean Burgess 124 and Brennan Rietema 104.

Arthur Ferguson was second in the TT in 18.40 and Buck Macky third in 18.48.

Neil MacPherson broke through for his first club championsh­ip title, winning the E grade overall series with 100 points, from Bruce Mandeno 97 and third placed Kathryn Trewavas 92.

MacPherson clinched his series victory by placing eighth in the TT won by Graham Dallas in 20.08, from Sandra Gatenby 20.31 and Glen Rennie 20.36.

The Under 15 series was won by Kallum Mardon with 81 points, from Devon Briggs 73 and Elise Loyer 71.

Briggs went one better winning the TT in 9.30 ahead of Mardon 9.32 and Jack Whitall 9.37.
